Engagement Announcement!

We are so pleased to announce that on September 29th, Caleb asked Sophie for her hand in marriage …  and she said, “Yes!”

As parents, you always hope that your children will prayerfully choose their future mate. Sophie was handpicked by God for our son. We love her dearly and are delighted that she will become a Thomas in the winter of 2019.

Mission Training International

On another note, after our time in Texas we headed out to Colorado to Mission Training International’s Debrief and Renewal (DAR) program. The director of our missions sending organization highly recommended this program to us. We are so glad we attended! The facilitators touched on important topics such as: taking a pause, stresses encountered on the field, transition, and soul care. Often, there are so many demands on missionaries serving on the foreign field that they don’t have time to process culture shock, transition, loss, and more. The grounds at MTI were tranquil and perfect for finding a quiet spot to pray and seek the Lord. With the changes and transitions we have faced over the past year, this program was a much needed break from the routine of life and ministry at the Abraham Project.

Happy Birthday “B”!

We were fortunate enough to be able to spend Bethany’s birthday with her in Tulsa.  Our little girl is all grown up a 19!  We are so glad that God blessed us all those years ago.  Bethany has amazed us in ways we would never have imagined!  God is molding her into a beautiful young woman and we are so proud of her!

Recently, Luke’s boss shared how he was making a difference at work. There is a boy with Down Syndrome that attends Special Ed. at the school where Luke works. Often, Felipe will not get off the bus when he arrives at the school. The bus driver and the Special Ed. teachers try coaxing him, but he won’t move. His boss says that Luke goes over and sits with him and they “talk.” She has no idea what Luke tells him. In the end, he says, “Come on Felipe, walk with me” and the boy responds to Luke’s gentle appeal. Luke has a special place in his heart for others who are, as he says, “Just like me.” We’ve noticed that he identifies with people who have a physical or mental handicap in a unique way. We are so proud of how the Lord is using him to make others feel special.

Thomas Family Update

Stephen, Jr. & Kendra are progressing nicely on Project Panama, as all the legal organizational documents have now been submitted to the Panamanian government. They are awaiting final approval. In addition, they are actively pursuing a piece of property and will soon begin raising the necessary funds to make the purchase.

Caleb continues working and traveling for his company. Last month, he and Steve Jr. took a quick jaunt to Panama in order to get his cedula (social security card) updated since he is on their Board of Directors. It had been 20 years since his last visit to Panama. He was amazed at all the changes he saw in that small country.

Luke has been working diligently at Saint Clare, his former high school. Thankfully, he is doing well. The new schedule has taken a little getting used to. Instead of leaving when the students leave (like he used to), all personnel stays an extra hour. He recently attended a training session one day after school where he had to stay till 5:00 p.m. As long as they serve refreshments, which they did, he’s a happy camper!

Bethany is looking forward to finishing her first year of college next month! She has maintained outstanding grades and has been offered a membership in the Honor Society. She is planning to take a summer course in Microbiology and then head home at the end of May.

Happy Birthday Kendra!

IMG_0002 (3)

We are so grateful that the Lord brought Kendra into our lives two years ago.  She has blended into our weird, unconventional family in a very good way!  It almost seems like she’s always been a part of our family.  We would like to wish her the best birthday ever on he 26 year celebration!  Blessings for a great year!

It’s Official!

At the end of the year, we were summoned to a meeting with the Director of Special Education at the high school Luke graduated from in 2014.  For the past 3 years, Luke has worked on a voluntary basis at the school.  During that time, she (and many others) worked diligently to get Luke hired on as a personnel member.  At our meeting, she gave us the great news that the school board had finally voted in favor of Luke!  He will receive the salary and benefits due to any Costa Rican worker in his shoes.  In January, Luke opened his bank account where his funds will be transferred electronically and his first official day of work began on Tuesday, January 30th.  We have seen God’s faithfulness to Luke over the years and we are so thankful for this incredible opportunity that has been afforded him!

Grandma Connie arrived today, just in time to ring in the new year!  We enjoyed finger foods, movies, and fireworks!  Happy New Year from the Thomas family!

Merry Christmas!

It’s Christmas morning and we began the day with Steve reading the scriptures.  It was a sweet reminder of God’s love for mankind and the ultimate gift of all!  Afterwards, we enjoyed the “Giving and receiving of gifts!”

For a number of years, instead of traditional Christmas fare, we have opted for steaks (something we don’t often eat on the mission field).  This year was no different ….

We started with Strawberry Parmesan salad …

then on to the main entree, steak, baked potatoes, grilled shrimp and veggies (tomatoes and onions).  To top it all off, we had Monkey Bread for dessert!

It was a great way to top off an awesome day!
